What should I use to prime a sweat shirt for fabric paints?
The sweater fabric has a loose weave. It a jansport Notre Dame college hoodie sweater. I was asked to paint a scene onto it. Want it to have a painterly look (fresh brush strokes).
Should I use the white as a base/primer or is there something better. The fabric is similar to an average jogging sweater made by Nike or Chamion- no fancy material just a regular sweat shirt.
Wash the sweat shirt in washing up liquid to get rid of any nasties. Do not use softener. Air dry.
You don’t have to use a base colour unless the colour of the shirt or your design dictates the need. Use acrylic paint diulted with fabric medium as per instructions on the bottle. Not sure if this will hold brushstrokes though. Heat set either in the sunshine or with an iron as per instructions on bottle fabric medium. Loose weave stuff is harder to paint, could you screen print?
